It’s thought to play a major role in the “grapefruit juice effect” in which the juice alters the metabolism of pharmaceutical medications. 6,7,-dihydroxybergamottin obstructs the enzyme CYP3A4, which is mostly found in the liver and intestines, to heighten the concentration of medication in the blood.
